The Rumors Are True: USTA NorCal’s Board Will Charge League Players a $25 Tax to Pay Mostly Private Clubs
If you’re a League player, you have probably heard the rumor: "USTA NorCal is going to add a twenty-something dollar fee to all League registrations."
Well, the public meeting minutes of NorCal’s Board of Director meeting from 12/11/19 just got posted and they confirm: The Board approve a $25 “Facility Use Fee” to be charged on every single League registration.
This tax will be in addition to what we’re already paying, effectively doubling the cost to join a League team to $54! But that’s only the tip of the iceberg.
100% of this tax will be exclusively distributed to “members orgs,” which are mostly private clubs.
As if that is not enough, here’s another brazen piece of information from the minutes: “No staff or committee commentary was presented as part of the proposal.” This means that neither League staff, whom most of us have interacted with one way or another, nor the Adult League Committee had the chance to weigh in on the proposal and voice their opinion.
But the most outrageous part is this: If this tax is implemented, League players would essentially pay over $1.4 million a year to these clubs.
It’s pretty obvious that this tax is solely driven by a group of private club representatives on the board who want to abuse Leagues to enrich their country clubs.
The meeting minutes do not specify how soon this tax will be implemented but we, the League players, have to start acting now! We cannot let this group of private clubs abuse the League program.
We have to stick together to #SaveNorCalLeagues and make our voices heard!
We’re over 20,000 players in NorCal. Imagine what we can achieve together if we all just do these two things:
