On behalf of the Adult League players of Northern California, #SaveNorCalLeagues is sending this open letter to the leadership of USTA National to ask for your immediate intervention in the blatant abuse of power by the Board of Directors of Northern California.
#SaveNorCalLeagues started this online petition, which has collected over 4,000 signatures in only ten days, to fight this tax and sent the petition with this open letter to the Board, demanding an immediate revocation of this tax.
In a lengthy response sent to presumably all Adult League players Friday night (copied in email below), the Board clearly explained their sole reason for implementing this fee: To generate revenue for “smaller clubs” who decided to refrain from increasing the membership dues for their own members and who are now financially struggling as a result of that poor business decision.
Instead of adjusting their business strategy and increasing the membership dues for their own members, these club representatives are now trying to abuse their position on the Board to impose a tax on all Adult League players across Northern California; a tax that would generate between $1.4 and $1.8 million a year in revenue for their own clubs.
It is plainly obvious that these Directors of the Board are not acting with the fiduciary duty they have towards the not-for-profit organization they serve, USTA NorCal and its members, but are brazenly abusing their power to enrich only themselves.
This action violates the mission of USTA Northern California. It violates the mission of USTA National. And it violates USTA Northern California’s status as a not-for-profit organization.
We, the League players of Northern California, ask you to immediately intervene in this abuse of power, revoke the ‘facility use fee’ and help us maintain the integrity of USTA NorCal and the Adult League program as an inclusive and inviting lifetime activity for everyone.
The League players of USTA Northern California
#SaveNorCalLeagues
Thanks for this. Is this going to the National board, or the National executives, or both?
